Birnbeck Pier, Weston-super-Mare, UK

The proposal for Birnbeck Island and Pier provides various degrees of protected environments all serving different functions within a space defined by a curved environmental screen covering the entire island. Pier approach to the island is maintained and restored to reach the existing wooden decking level. The existing deck is restored and extended.

Northern quarter of the island is covered to the highest degree with curved wooden/glass louvers and glass canopies. The area is only accessible through the visitor's centre situated within the existing refurbished building. Series of water pools within the main enclosed space support a wellbeing centre and the adjacent area is designed as an internal botanical garden with climate sensitive plant species.
